Abstract:
The Historic Digital Raster Graphics (HDRGs) are a collection of digital images of USGS topographic maps dating back to the late 1800's. The topographic maps were scanned, georeferenced, clipped (to eliminate collar information) and compressed to generate a product suitable for use in digital mapping environments. (Intermediate data products, e.g. the original scans, the unclipped images, etc., may also be available upon request.)

The image inside the map neatline was georeferenced to the surface of the Earth. When combined with other digital products, such as DOQs or DEMs, the resulting image provides additional visual information for the extraction and revision of base cartographic information.

Georeferencing was verified based on the coincidence of image corners with standard 15-minute quadrangle boundaries. Interior features may not spatially coincide with more current, larger-scale GRANIT base data layers.

The file names represent the following characteristics of the source topographic maps:

HDRG reference to Historic Digital Raster Graphic format <15-minute Quad ID> 2-digit quadrangle ID C indicates image is clipped to quadrangle boundary _ used as field separator R where present, indicates ambiguity in road overlay date S where present, indicates shaded relief on map V where present, indicates vegetation overlay on map 15 reference to 15-minute quadrangle coverage _ used as field separator <Year> 4-digit year

The GRANIT HDRG collection was produced in partnership with the UNH Library and the NH Department of Environmental Services, with financial support from the UNH Vice President for Research and Public Service. We are grateful to colleagues at the Evans Map Room, Dartmouth College Library, for making their collection of historic quads available to augment those archived at UNH.

Purpose:
The HDRG's are georeferenced to the surface of the Earth, and therefore may be readily used as a layer in a geographic information system. They provide a valuable historic perspective on the state's changing landscape.

In general, DRG's are commonly used as background layers and as a means to perform quality assurance on other digital products. The HDRGs may also be merged with other digital data (e.g. digital elevation models or digital orthophotoquads) to produce a hybrid digital file.

The DRG is an 8-bit color image which employs a color palette to ensure uniform colors throughout a particular DRG series. The values for a particular color, therefore, will remain consistent throughout that DRG series. Although the color values of the DRG may sometimes match those of the paper source map, a user will usually notice small differences between the colors on the digital image and on the paper map. Also, the quality of the user's output device (e.g. monitor or printer) affects the DRG color displayed.

The Digital Raster Graphic (DRG) is a faithfully reproduced digital image of the original source map. Some differences may be detected between the source graphic used and the DRG due to the RGB values assigned that particular color. The intent is to recreate those colors as near as possible. Data completeness for digital raster graphic files reflect content of the source graphic. Features may have been eliminated or generalized on the source graphic, due to scale and legibility constraints.

Process_Description:
The source maps (PAPERQUADS) were scanned on an HP DesignJet 815mfp scanner. Images were scanned at 600 dpi using the color, map, and 0 lightness settings from the scanner menu. Prior to scanning, the maps were inserted into a protective sleeve to protect the quads, given the age and fragility of many of the source documents. A black background sheet was inserted into the sleeve to prevent "ghost text" from appearing in the scanned images.

The scanning process produced tif format images, which were each inspected for acceptability. In some cases, various scanning artifacts, such as vertical lines, caused us to reject the image and re-scan the quad.

Once accepted, the scanned images were converted from 3-layer RGB tif files to an indexed, single-band tif file using Adobe Photoshop, Versions 6.0 and 7.0. Settings used in the process were as follows: Palette-local (selective), Colors-256, Forced-black & white, and transparency. Options included: Dither-diffusion, Amount-75%, and Preserve exact colors.

The indexed tif images were georeferenced to NH State Plane feet, NAD83, using ERDAS Imagine 8.7, Service Pack 2. Four ground control points (GCPs) were collected by digitizing a point at each corner of the quad and entering its corresponding coordinate at the keyboard. GCP's were digitized in the following order: northwest corner, northeast corner, southeast corner, southwest corner. The raw image was then processed using the nearest neighbor sampling technique and an output cell size of 9 feet square. This process yielded a set of georeferenced img files.

The georeferenced img files were then clipped to extract just the map image information (e.g. to remove collar text). ERDAS Imagine was used for this process. The clipped images were written out to TIFF format.

Finally, the TIFF images were compressed to SID format using LizardTech GeoExpress, Version 4.0.0.500. The MrSID Generation 2 output format was utilized, with an encoding ratio of 20:1.
