Space Grant - 2011
Lead Agency: GRANIT
Primary Contact: David Justice
Sponsor(s): National Aeronautics and Space Administration
Start Date - End Date 06/2010 - 06/2012
Description: Object-based image analysis (OBIA) methods are being used to classify various forms of forest change in northern New Hampshire. Definiens OBIA software is used to segment and classify clearcut, thinned, and forests in the early stages of succession based on Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper (TM) data from September of 2001 and August of 2010. As a general rule, areas that appear green in 2001 and bright pink in 2010 are classified as "clearcut", while areas that are green in 2001 but brownish green in 2010 are considered "thinned" and areas appearing bright pink in 2001 but more green in 2010 are considered "successional". The results of the work will be used to update the 2001 GRANIT Landcover data layer for this region.
